NOEPE-AKANU JOINT BORDER POST – The ECOWAS Commission convened a high-level dialogue on Thursday (August 13, 2026) aimed at tearing down bureaucratic barriers to free movement along one of West Africa’s busiest commercial routes.

Held at the Noepe-Akanu Joint Border Post between Ghana and Togo, the meeting brought together border officials, cross-border traders, and transporters from Ghana, Togo, and Benin to troubleshoot the daily challenges affecting the flow of people, goods, and services along the critical Abidjan-Lagos Corridor.

Special focus on women and youth

With women and youth making up the majority of informal cross-border traders in the region, the dialogue prioritized their specific needs—from unpredictable customs delays to security bottlenecks that eat into their profit margins.

Officials took the opportunity to spotlight several flagship ECOWAS facilitation tools currently being rolled out, including:

· The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) for seamless travel.
· The SIGMAT system, designed to digitize and simplify transit procedures.
· The upcoming Abidjan-Lagos Highway mega-project and new overload control mechanisms to improve road safety.

What’s at stake?

The engagement is more than just a talk shop. By strengthening cooperation between border control officers and local stakeholders, the Commission aims to make cross-border movement safer, faster, and more predictable.

According to the ECOWAS delegation, the dialogue will conclude with a set of actionable recommendations to overcome persistent hurdles—specifically targeting the needs of women and youth traders. Ultimately, the initiative is a direct push to accelerate the ECOWAS regional integration agenda, transforming the busy corridor into a true economic lifeline rather than a chokepoint.
