Ghana has accelerated its quest to position the country as the gateway to Africa in the true sense of the word, with a sweeping modernization drive at the Accra International Airport (AIA). President John Dramani Mahama is spearheading a series of landmark infrastructure projects designed to transform the airport into a world-class facility and a competitive aviation hub for the West African sub-region.
A Legacy of Infrastructure Delivery
President Mahama’s commitment to national infrastructure is well-established. During his previous tenure, he delivered Terminal 3 at the Accra International Airport—a flagship project capable of handling 5 million passengers annually with six boarding bridges. He also oversaw the massive MPS Terminal at the Tema Harbour and secured US$400 million in funding for the Tema to Mpakadan Rail Project. Now, he has returned to the airport with an even more ambitious vision.
Connecting Terminals 2 and 3
Earlier in 2026, President Mahama cut the sod for a new connecting concourse linking Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 at the Accra International Airport. This project is designed to enable seamless, secure, and efficient connectivity between the two terminals, reducing transit time and improving operational efficiency for airlines and airport users.
The concourse will deliver five passenger boarding air bridges, modern waiting and holding areas, premium and VIP lounges, and retail and commercial facilities. It complements the ongoing repurposing of Terminal 2 into a dual-purpose facility capable of handling both domestic and international traffic, with selected airlines to be relocated there to ease congestion at Terminal 3.
A Game-Changing Multi-Purpose Complex
On Thursday, August 27, 2026, President Mahama cut the sod for a new Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Terminal 3 enclave. This ambitious project, expected to be completed within 24 months, features:
· A 7-storey car park with over 2,030 covered parking bays, making it one of the largest airport parking facilities in the country
· Two hotels with a combined 370 rooms—a 120-room five-star premium hotel and a 250-room three-star hotel catering to both business executives and budget-conscious travellers
· An 80-metre pedestrian sky bridge connecting the complex directly to Terminal 3
· A shopping mall with a food court, retail spaces, banking services, and office spaces for rental
· A sky lounge for entertainment and leisure
· A sky observatory offering panoramic views of aircraft landings and take-offs
The building will have 15 floors, including two basement levels, integrating parking, retail, and hotel facilities into a single structure.
Fully Cashless and Ticketless Operation
In a significant technological upgrade, the new car park will operate fully cashless and ticketless, supported by CCTV surveillance and automated access control. Vehicles will be captured automatically on entry and exit, with payments made digitally—eliminating the long queues that currently plague the airport during peak travel hours.
Funding Without Government Budget Support
Remarkably, all these projects are being financed entirely from the balance sheets of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), without any direct government funding. President Mahama stated emphatically: “The Government of Ghana has not given either of these two institutions one single cedi for these projects”. This approach demonstrates how state institutions can undertake strategic infrastructure development without increasing the country’s debt burden.
Meeting Growing Demand
The expansion is driven by surging passenger traffic, which increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. Peak hour congestion between 6pm and 10pm GMT has already begun affecting check-in, immigration, security screening, and baggage handling. The current parking infrastructure at Terminal 3, designed to accommodate just 513 vehicles, has become grossly inadequate.
A Broader Aviation Vision
Beyond the Accra International Airport, the government is advancing a comprehensive aviation agenda:
· A new 54-metre air traffic control tower nearing completion
· Runway expansion at Kumasi Airport to accommodate wide-bodied international aircraft
· New airports being procured for Bolgatanga, Wa, and Nsuatre near Sunyani
· Installation of 3D CT Connect enhanced baggage scanners eliminating the need for passengers to remove laptops and belts at security
President Mahama captured the vision succinctly: “We want to make Ghana a preferred destination point, a convenient transit point and a competitive aviation hub in Africa”. “Ghana is ready to lead, ready to compete and ready to build world-class infrastructure that matches our ambitions”.
